ARCHIVED - Lorry drivers and buses subject to dangerous driving checks this week
Cartagena police are doubling down on HGV drivers to make sure they’re obeying road rules
The Policía Local in Cartagena are taking part in a new campaign to monitor trucks and buses which has been launched by Spain’s Directorate General of Traffic (DGT). The campaign targets dangerous truck drivers and bus drivers this week from Monday October 11 to Sunday 17.
The DGT have started this campaign to highlight the fact that driving a truck or a bus is not the same as driving a car, especially if they are carrying cargo because there is a higher possibility of overturning or running off the road.
In 2019, lorries and vans were involved in 16% of road accidents in Spain that caused casualties, and buses in 2%. There is also a higher fatality rate in accidents involving goods vehicles weighing more than 3,500kg, which is exacerbated by lorry drivers under extreme time pressures sometimes not taking the proper rest times when driving.
