ARCHIVED - Loud bangs heard in the Region of Murcia explained: military planes broke the sound barrier
Neighbours in Cartagena, La Unión and Lorca reported two loud bangs on Tuesday November 30
Residents in several municipalities in the south of the Region of Murcia will have heard two loud bangs on Tuesday afternoon (November 30), and many were left wondering what had happened, with some locals even calling the emergency services.
The loud bangs were heard across Cartagena, Lorca, Librilla and the rest of the Mar Menor and Valle del Guadalentín areas at about 5pm, with barely a few seconds between the two.
After receiving several calls from panicked members of the public, the 112 emergency services confirmed that there had been no major incident and that all signs pointed towards the bangs being caused by military planes breaking the sound barrier.
This explanation is backed up by the fact that witnesses saw two planes flying over the Mar Menor shortly before the bangs were heard.
Planes breaking the sound barrier while training is a relatively common occurrence in the Region, but, nevertheless, the loud bang always causes alarm as it makes houses and glass windows shake, and, for many, the first explanation that usually comes to mind is something more serious, such as a gunshot or an explosion.
