ARCHIVED - Majority of Covid outbreak cases in Alicante amongst 15 to 34 year olds
Teens and thirty-somethings in Valencia region's three provinces, including Alicante, most infected in outbreaks
More than half (57 per cent) of coronavirus cases associated with outbreaks in the Valencia region are amongst 15 to 34-year-olds, and 79.3 per cent of the outbreaks have a social origin, according to data from the Ministry of Health.
Analysis of outbreaks registered during the last three weeks of July reveals that the majority of associated cases were detected in adolescents and people in their thirties, followed by 35 to 64-year-olds (23 per cent).
"As age increases and, therefore, there is higher vaccination coverage, the number of infections decreases", says the regional Minister for Health, Ana Barceló.
To help monitor Covid cases and "relieve the workload of Primary Care Teams", the squad of 1,622 trackers tasked with keeping an eye on infections and outbreaks in the region has been reinforced with an additional 500 monitors, 50 of them Army personnel.
"In addition, we have implemented the vacation plan and reinforcements for all levels of care, and we are accelerating the vaccination campaign in these most affected population groups".
Outbreaks with a social origin - gatherings of friends and family - account for almost 80 per cent of all clusters, and 73.9 of all registered cases.
"We gather around the table to eat and drink and sometimes we remove the mask and forget to put it up when we are not consuming. Contagion can also happen because we don't keep our social distance, we feel safe with our loved ones, but it is precisely when we are with those closest to us that we must be more careful, to protect them and ourselves. Any carelessness can cause a contagion", warns Barceló.
The data, published today (Wednesday, August 4), shows that 85.5 per cent of new outbreaks have less than 10 associated cases, 14.1 per cent with between 10 and 40 cases and 0.5 per cent with 40 cases or more.
By province, of the outbreaks reported in the last three weeks of July, 63 per cent were recorded in Valencia, 24 per cent in Alicante and 13 per cent in Castellón.
