ARCHIVED - Man arrested after dousing Alicante bar in petrol and threatening to set it alight
The detainee allegedly threatened to torch the bar on the Costa Blanca over a motorbike sale
Police in Alicante have arrested a 41-year-old man for allegedly pouring two jerry cans of petrol over tables in a bar before threatening to set fire to the premises with a lighter.
The incident happened in front of shocked customers during the early hours of Tuesday morning, October 19.
The bar owner immediately called the National Police before the would-be arsonist fled the scene on his motorbike.
Several patrols were quickly on the scene and cordoned off the area, before Alicante firefighters and used foam to prevent a "spontaneous combustion due to the large amount of flammable liquid present".
Armed with a detailed description of the suspect and his motorbike, police were able to locate the 41-year-old Spaniard, who was still in possession of the two jerry cans, with traces of petrol inside.
He was arrested and during an interview allegedly admitted threatening to torch the bar following a disagreement with a relative of the owner. Police were told he'd bought his motorbike from the relative and was not happy with the purchase.
The detainee was charged with making threats and criminal damage and will appear before Alicante Court of Instruction this week.
