A man from Jumilla has been investigated after being caught allegedly poaching hares during the closed season in a Guardia Civil operation targeting illegal hunting in the Region of Murcia. The arrest was made as part of the Guardia Civil’s ongoing anti-poaching plan, with specialist officers from Seprona tracking the suspect after receiving information that he had been using greyhounds to hunt hares in restricted areas.According to investigators, the man had already been linked to similar offences in Albacete in 2024, and was believed to be taking extra precautions to avoid detection while continuing illegal hunting activity.During one of the surveillance operations, officers caught him in the act of hunting hares on land where hunting is not permitted and at a time of year when the animals are in their breeding period.
He was found in possession of a thermal imaging device, which is banned for hunting use, along with several dogs reportedly used to chase down the animals. The Guardia Civil say the device allowed him to locate wildlife more easily at night or in low visibility conditions, making it a particularly serious breach of hunting regulations. The operation, codenamed “Termi caza”, led to the opening of proceedings against the suspect for an alleged crime against flora, fauna and domestic animals.Images: Guardia Civil
