ARCHIVED - Man from Lepe caught trying to drive 200 bottles of beer onto beach in his jeep
Police say that although the driver undoubtedly thought it was cool driving beer on ice down to the beach, he could now be fined up to 3,000 euros
The archetypal “man from Lepe” is the butt of many Spanish jokes, and is often portrayed as the hapless fool in many a humorous recounting of events, akin to the old “Englishman, Irishman and Scotsman” jokes of our own childhood, so Spanish social media wags have enjoyed sharing this little news story over the weekend.
In this particular incident the “man from Lepe” now faces a potential fine of up to 3,000 euros after police intercepted his off-road jeep accessing the La Antilla beach in Lepe (Huelva, Andalusia) through a pedestrian footbridge and walkway, with the open back of the vehicle loaded with around 200 bottles of beer, packed onto a bed of ice.
Agents arrived at the scene when the vehicle had successfully reached its destination and was down on the sand with its “cool cargo.”
However, they made it very plain to the driver that "Although it may seem very cool, accessing the bathing area with an SUV loaded with bottles" can lead to penalties of around 3,000 euros, "even more so if it is done through a footbridge enabled for the public and to which some damage has been caused", they commented on social networks.
Readers learning Spanish may find the use of the word “cool” of interest here; the police have used the expression “guay”, which is often used as an expression akin to “that’s cool”, “Que guay”.
