ARCHIVED - Mar Menor is safe to swim in, claims Murcia Health Minister
The presence of sludge and dead animals are apparently no impediment to the health of bathers in the Mar Menor
The Regional Minister for Health in Murcia, Juan José Pedreño, has assured that the results of the microbiological analyses carried out on 35 beaches in the Mar Menor have shown that they are “suitable for bathing”.
This week saw another load of dead fish wash up on the beaches of the Mar Menor in images that will be familiar to anyone who has been following the fate of the Murcia lagoon each summer for the last several years.
Even faced with the disgusting thought of swimming amongst dead fish and algal blooms caused by nitrate contaminants, Pedreño insisted that “like every year” his department carries out various tests to “precisely assess the state of the waters” of the Mar Menor and that “the Department of Agriculture periodically carries out physico-chemical analyses”, all of which have found that the water conditions on 35 beaches are favourable.
Many local mayors are not so confident, and have called for someone – the Regional government, the central government, the EU, anyone – to do something – anything, after it was found the state of the Mar Menor is already affecting the number of tourists willing to holiday in the area this summer.
