ARCHIVED - Mar Menor petition deadline extended by three months
Petition to save the Mar Menor didn’t meet the 500,000-signature threshold, but now has until January 20 to be passed in Congress
The deadline for the collection of signatures for the Popular Legislative Initiative (ILP) petition to give force a debate in parliament about giving legal personhood to the Mar Menor was due to end on Thursday October 21, but the Bureau of Congress has given three more months for campaigners to get the requisite number of signatures. The petition needs to have 500,000 signatures to pass and allow the legal personality of the Mar Menor to be discussed in Congress, but by Thursday’s initial deadline feel short with 450,000.
Now though, in view of the large number of signatures collected and the evident popularity behind the scheme, it has been agreed to extend the deadline until January 20 2022 to reach those 500,000 signatures.
The justification for this extension, according to Third Secretary of the Lower House Javier Sánchez Serna, was “the exceptional circumstances of the pandemic”, which had made the collection of signatures more complicated. He also noted that the right to political participation “more than justified” the extension.
The petition must be signed in person and cannot be done online. There are various signature points around Spain and Europe, and you can find your nearest signature point on the special map created by the ILP Mar Menor group.
