ARCHIVED - Mass Covid outbreak in Cordoba prison
Unions have called for mass testing of staff and inmates at the Andalucían penitentiary
The CSIF Prisons Córdoba union has reiterated its request to the Alcolea prison management that a mass screening be undertaken on the entire population, staff and inmates, after a Covid outbreak was reported in Cordoba earlier this week. So far, testing has been carried out in Module 1, where the first case was discovered, and it has resulted in 42 positive cases among inmates and one staff member.
While all those who were negative for coronavirus were moved to a different area in the prison, on Thursday October 7 the union confirmed that the situation seems to be “worsening” since two inmates in Module 11 have now also tested positive.
In an attempt to stem the outbreak, prison authorities have already cancelled permits which allow inmates to leave the prison and all transfers have been suspended; however, CSIF has highlighted the enormous concern among workers and has reiterated its demand for the entire prison to be tested.
The union has also thrown its support behind mandatory vaccinations, appealing to the responsibility and solidarity of prison staff, and has warned that it will keep a close eye on the management of the penitentiary to ensure that the situation is brought under control as quickly as possible.
