ARCHIVED - Mayor of Totana dies after weeks in ICU with coronavirus
The Mayor had been in a Murcia hospital since December 20
After being admitted to hospital shortly before the Christmas holidays with coronavirus, the Mayor of Totana, Juan José Cánovas, has sadly died this Sunday January 16.Friends, work colleagues and acquaintances from across the Region of Murcia have since taken to social media to express their grief and condolences to his immediate family.Mr Cánovas was taken to the Morales Meseguer Hospital (Murcia) on December 20 for a check-up after having difficulty breathing. He then tested positive for Covid-19 and was admitted into a ward. After just a few days his condition worsened and the Mayor was taken into intensive care.The 63-year-old had other underlying medical issues as he had been diagnosed with leukaemia years earlier.In the municipality of Totana, an official mourning period has been declared until Tuesday January 18, with all flags flying at half mast until then. A public farewell to the Mayor will be held in the Plaza de La Constitución on Monday at 10am.Image: Ayuntamiento de Totana
