ARCHIVED - Mazarron demands Covid testing points in the municipality
Health centres in Mazarrón are struggling to fulfil the demand for Covid tests
For the past few weeks, the regional government has organised external Covid testing points in several municipalities which are run by additional 061 emergency staff, relieving some of the immense pressure on health centres across the Region of Murcia.
However, this week, the municipality of Mazarrón has been excluded from the list of health centres where these tests are going to be carried out. This means that the burden of testing residents who suspect they may have coronavirus falls on staff in the health centres in Mazarrón and Puerto de Mazarrón, who are struggling to keep up with the demand for tests while providing care for non-Covid patients.
The Town Hall and the Health department in Mazarrón are not happy with this decision and have requested that “at least two weekly testing points” be set up in the municipality, as has been done in other areas of Murcia.
Francisco José García Ortega, the head of the Health department, warned that this situation was causing health centres in Mazarrón to collapse as the demand for Covid tests is saturating the system.
