ARCHIVED - Mazarrón commemorates World Recycling Day with a free ecoRAP event
Everyone is invited along to the Plaza del Ayuntamiento to learn about recycling through rap music
May 17 is World Recycling Day, declared by UNESCO and celebrated around the world with the aim of raising global awareness of the need to acquire more efficient production and consumption habits that are respectful towards our natural environment.
All the activities held to commemorate this day have to do with a simple reminder: it is necessary to reduce, reuse and recycle the materials we use to give them a second life and prevent them from ending up as part of the waste that the planet is not capable of eliminating on its own.
Awareness-raising actions such as this one are useful for getting the message across to people about the need to protect the environment, through education and information. Raising awareness is also the best way for the people to learn about and collaborate with these major environmental challenges.
Citizen participation is an essential element in tackling the greatest threat of our time, as selective separation of recyclables in people’s homes is one of the most important links in the recycling process.
With this in mind, Mazarrón Town Council has launched an original initiative to create activities for the youth of the municipality to teaches them sustainable habits and their role in the recycling process by using hip-hop music and rap.
The ecoRap is taking place on May 17 in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento de Mazarrón and on May 18 in the Plaza Toneleros in Puerto de Mazarrón, from 6pm to 8pm. At both events, which are free to attend for everyone, two recognised rappers from the group TRK will give a masterclass on how a rap is born, structured, set to music and sung, all with an environmental theme.
According to the Town Hall, the main objectives of this activity are:
- to commemorate World Recycling Day;
- to set people straight on which waste goes in which recycling container;
- to promote awareness of actions that encourage citizens to be part of the recycling process;
- to make people aware of how our actions affect climate change.
This environmental event joins a recent beach clean-up day in Mazarrón and a new awareness campaign about recycling used cooking oil.
