Mercadona announces surprise opening hours for Spain Day
Spain’s favourite supermarket chain will change its hours of operation this coming October 12
The National Day of Spain, alternatively known as the ‘Día de la Hispanidad’, ‘Fiesta Nacional de España’ or plain old Spain Day, is a country-wide holiday celebrated every year on October 12. It’s the next big public holiday in Spain and traditionally, if it falls on a weekday, schools and businesses tend to close.
This year, however, Spain Day falls on a Saturday.
Now, Mercadona is well known for adhering strictly to policy and it typically closes on all public holidays, whatever the date. But the Valencian supermarket chain has made a surprise exception, announcing that it will indeed open most of its stores across Spain this coming Saturday October 12.
The only exceptions will be Aragón and the Basque Country, where stores will remain closed.
Anyone planning to stock up on goodies for a barbecue or, weather permitting, a relaxing day on the beach should be aware that Mercadona will operate reduced hours, from 9am until 3pm.
“To avoid surprises and plan their purchases in advance, Mercadona recommends that its customers consult the store locator on its official website. There they will be able to find detailed information about the opening and closing times of each specific establishment, as well as the days on which they will be closed,” the chain said in a statement.
We’ll have to make the most of the celebrations on October 12, as it’s one of the last national holidays of the year before Christmas creeps up on us. After Spain Day, we have All Saints’ Day on November 1; Día de la Constitución Española, or Spanish Constitution Day on December 6; and, of course, Christmas Day on December 25.
Looking ahead to 2025, the Spanish government has already confirmed that Spain will have 12 national public holidays:
- January 1: New Year
- January 6: Three Kings' Day
- March 19: San José
- Holy Thursday
- Good Friday
- May 1: Labour Day
- August 15: Our Lady of the Assumption (Virgen de la Asunción)
- October 12: Spain Day
- November 1: All Saints' Day
- December 6: Constitution Day (Día de la Constitución)
- December 8: Immaculate Conception (La Inmaculada)
- December 25: Christmas day.
