ARCHIVED - Mercadona invests 4.2 million into new San Pedro supermarket
The company have opened yet another shop in the Region of Murcia with a more energy efficient store model
The Spanish supermarket giants Mercadona have opened a new shop in the municipality of San Pedro del Pinatar after investing 4.2 million euros into making the new supermarket as modern and efficient as possible.
This new shop, open from September 20, is operating under the New Efficient Store Model, which aims to optimise the shopping experience for customers as well as benefitting the environment. A new double-glazed entrance, much wider aisles and improved shopping trolleys are just some of the shop’s new elements.
The opening hours of the new supermarket are 9am until 9.30pm from Monday to Saturday and the adjacent car park has 164 spaces.
Environmentally friendly supermarket design
More sections are also included in the new design, including a central perfume and cosmetics gondola, a baked goods section, a specialised sushi section and a bigger and better fish and shell food department. Another novelty is the ‘ready to eat’ section, which Mercadona have recently introduced in many of its Spanish stores, allowing customers to buy a variety of take-away meals, including customisable salads, pizzas and pasta dishes. In addition, these meals come in environmentally friendly containers, made out of materials such as sugar cane (a compostable material), cardboard and paper.
In order to further decrease their carbon footprint, Mercadona have taken measures to reduce energy consumption by up to 40% compared to older shop models. The thermal and acoustic insulation has been improved and new energy-optimising freezers are being used in the store. An automated LED lighting system has also been installed and allows much more efficient energy management, as it is regulated according to zones and time of the day.
