ARCHIVED - Migrants rescued off Murcia coast living in squalor, according to Police
The filthy facilities at the Cartagena Escombreras port have been reported to the authorities
The National Police in Cartagena have revealed the filthy living conditions suffered by irregular immigrants housed in temporary tents at the CATE facilities in the Port of Escombreras, once they are rescued off the coast of Murcia.
“Nobody cleans here,” one officer claimed, before sharing shocking photos of the make-shift camp that has been used for the last three years. The images show overflowing rubbish bins as well as piles of dirty clothes, plastic, paper, cardboard and discarded food waste scattered in almost every corner of the settlement.
In the last 48 hours, a total of 132 migrants have been intercepted off the Murcian coast aboard nine small boats, and as the sea remains calm and the weather settled, the authorities believe the summer influx will continue at this rate.
Upon learning of the presence of children at the unsanitary camps, the association Coexist without Racism has called on the regional government to “immediately” move “the boys and girls locked up there, together with the responsible adults who accompany them” to a “place that meets the minimum established conditions.”
According to the police officers making the complaint, last month an Algerian man who was sleeping on the floor of one of the tents was bitten on the face by a rat, and just last week, several rodents appeared in the police booth and began to eat the food which was being prepared for the migrants.
The police unions further highlighted the deplorable conditions migrants are forced to endure for the first 72 hours after they arrive in Cartagena: they only have water from a hose to clean themselves outdoors, while the run-off puddles on the dock, drawing swarms of mosquitoes.
Coexist without Racism has reported Escombreras to both the Ombudsman and the Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office, detailing that facility “maintains a rudimentary emergency device, with temporary tents and toilets, presenting basic health deficiencies and lack of adequate infrastructure for caring for people.”
