ARCHIVED - Mini tornado in Lorca to welcome the start of summer
Part of the Region of Murcia was on yellow alert for rainfall yesterday
The rains in the western part of Murcia which forced the Meteorological Agency Aemet to issue a yellow warning for risk of thunderstorms yesterday afternoon and evening were especially intense in the municipality of Lorca, on the first day of official summertime.
Torrents of water gushing down into the streets as 9.9mm of rain fell in the space of six hours, and in the nearby area of Purias one person even reported a ‘mini tornado’ sweeping across their swimming pool, where the storm dragged objects across the patio.
In Sutullena there were large puddles on the road that flooded the street. The Municipal Emergency Service received some calls alerting them of water on public roads in places where these problems usually occur when it rains a lot, but there was “nothing remarkable” according to the Councillor for Emergencies, Isabel Casalduero, and there were no phone calls to emergency services for help.
