ARCHIVED - More than 7 tonnes of hashish found on narco boat off Algeciras coast
Guardia Civil patrols intercepted the ship in stormy weather in the Straits of Gibraltar, suspecting that it could be carrying drugs.
Three Ukrainians have been arrested and more than seven tonnes of hashish seized from a boat in Algeciras (Cadiz) in a joint operation by the National Police, Guardia Civil and customs authorities.
The 24-metre-long ship, which was flying a Republic of Vanuatu flag, was intercepted by patrol boats in the Straits of Gibraltar at 5 pm on Tuesday during a force seven gale. They escorted the vessel to Algeciras port, and 200 bales of hashish were discovered in the cargo hold, which were unloaded on Wednesday and found to weigh a total of 7,130 kilos.
The southern coasts of Spain are a major entry point for hashish smuggled in from nearby Morocco. An ongoing special security plan for the Campo de Gibraltar area launched in July 2018 by the Interior Ministry seizes hundreds of tonnes of hashish a year, but although it has caused narcos to seek new routes along which to move the drugs, it seems to have done very little to stop them.
