ARCHIVED - Murcia bank robber in jail pending trial after injuring four during attempted heist
Three police officers were injured and a bank employee required surgery
A man who injured three police officers during an attempted bank robbery in Murcia on Tuesday 1st June has been held in jail pending trial on the instruction of the courts of Murcia. Among the charges he faces are attempted homicide and violent robbery.
The incident occurred in Calle Obispo Frutos in the centre of the regional capital, and the alert was raised at 8.57 by a customer who managed to flee the premises immediately. All nearby police patrols were immediately dispatched to the scene and four officers arrived within three minutes.
Through the window they saw the robber holding a man from behind with a knife at his throat, and entered immediately to attempt to defuse the situation. Taking advantage of a momentary loss of concentration by the attacker the officers attempted to overpower him, and during the ensuing struggle three were injured, one by a knife wound in the groin and the others with minor injuries to the hand and leg.
The member of bank staff who had been threatened by the robber also suffered serious knife wounds to his the hands as he protected himself from the blade, and underwent surgery at the Arrixaca hospital in El Palmar.
