Murcia banned phones in schools before the rest of Spain did; now grades are up and bullying is down
The Region of Murcia now has one of the highest employability rates among graduates in all of Spain

It's been a year since the Region of Murcia introduced a ban on mobile phones in schools, well ahead of the rest of Spain, and the numbers are in: serious incidents in the classroom have plummeted by a staggering 31%.
This significant decrease was announced by Minister of Education and Vocational Training, Víctor Marín, during his appearance before the Special Commission for the Study of Childhood and Adolescence in the Regional Assembly this week.
The mobile phone ban was introduced to reduce distractions and improve interaction between students and it’s fair to say the results are a resounding success. Cyberbullying cases have decreased by 24.4%, while incidents of harassment have dropped by a remarkable 73%.
Attacks on teachers using mobile devices have also decreased by 23%.
For Minister Marín, the goal of the mobile ban is to "ensure that all students feel valued and supported in their educational environment."
To achieve this, the Ministry has invested in additional resources, including the recruitment of more than 70 professionals, such as counsellors and community service teachers. This brings the total number of counsellors to 546, serving nearly 276,000 students across all educational levels in the Region of Murcia.
Minister Marín also highlighted the impressive employability data of Vocational Training graduates in the Region. According to the Ministry's statistics, Intermediate and Higher Level FP graduates in Murcia are among the top performers in national employability rankings.
The Ministry has also made significant strides in promoting academic success. The percentage of students advancing to the next grade level in ESO (Secondary Education) has increased, with 89.1% of students passing their first year, 87.09% passing their second year and 88.4% passing their third year.
Additionally, the number of students pursuing Baccalaureate studies has increased by 1,105.
Finally, the Ministry has committed to opening eight new school canteens in the next year.
