Murcia city welcomed more visitors than ever, filled more hotel rooms and saw record overnight stays boost revenue

Murcia capital city has long been one of Spain’s undiscovered cities. Maybe that’s why it has managed to keep its identity and that authentic Spanish feel. Little by little, Murcia is garnering more attention, and 2025 turned out to be one of its best years for tourism yet, with a little help from Hollywood!
Richard Gere’s visit for the lighting of the main Christmas tree certainly put the city on the map and probably played a part in making December a standout month in an already successful year.
December 2025 was the city’s best December ever for hotels. On average, 62.5% of rooms were booked, with hotels full over the long weekend in early December and several key days around Christmas. The average room rate was €72.80, while revenue per room reached €45.53, the highest December figures ever recorded.
On December 6, hotel occupancy reached 95%, with average room rates topping €100 for the first time and revenue per room close to €97. Other busy days, like December 27 and 31, had occupancy above 85%. The long weekend alone brought around €2.5 million into the local hotel sector.Over the year, Murcia welcomed more than 580,000 visitors, including 133,000 international travellers, a 22.6% increase on 2024 and almost three times the number in 2015. Total overnight stays passed 950,000, with international visitors accounting for more than 253,000 nights. August set a record on its own, with over 31,000 nights from foreign visitors. Murcia City is usually empty in August due to the very high temperatures.
Some other figures show just how strong the year was: in December alone, the city’s tourism office handled a record 5,165 enquiries, including 1,200 from abroad, 2,010 from other parts of Spain, and 1,957 from Murcia itself. Most people were interested in the city’s cultural attractions and, of course, the food!
The extensive Christmas programme with hundreds of events attracted plenty of people. Even the bad weather didn’t put people off. Highlights included the Árbol de la Circular opening with Richard Gere and children from the Aladina Foundation as mentioned above, the Christmas Market and the ‘Jardin de los Sueños’.
2025 also marked 1,200 years of the city’s history, which was celebrated with some traditional events. Business and conference tourism also grew, showing Murcia attracts a wide range of visitors, not just holidaymakers.
Tourism Councillor Jesús Pacheco said the figures show Murcia is now a strong city destination, growing faster than regional and national averages.
