ARCHIVED - Murcia brings in the big guns with drones to control mosquitos after heavy rain
The city council is intensifying mozzie control in the Rambla de Tabala, Murcia
Murcia has steped up its mosquito control campaign today (Friday September 30) following torrential rains which caused widespread flooding and left one man dead in the city.
The storms are forecast to beat a retreat this weekend, but in a bid to combat a proliferation of moquitos in the wake of the heavy rains, Murcia council is intensifying treatments with drones in areas with waterlogging, in particular in and around the Rambla de Tabala.
And in order to directly attack localised mosquito breeding sites, both ground and aerial means will be used next week.
In areas with puddles of rainwater and scuppers there will be weekly treatments with biological products that wipe out mosquitoes but are environmentally friendly and harmless to other species in the ecosystem.
The municipal pest control service, which is run by Laboratorios Lokímica, explained that the biological cycle of the mosquito requires an "aquatic environment for the development of the larvae before the adult individuals emerge". It's in this aquatic phase that control actions are most feasible before the mosquitoes disperse.
The council has once again called for public cooperation to "put an end to the proliferation of mosquitoes", as most of the outbreaks are found on private property. Locals are asked to remove any pots or objects that allow water to accumulate, pay attention to water fountains, pick up litter, keep drains clear and ensure ponds and pools are clean.
"Collections of water can give rise to mosquito breeding sites, so if we eliminate water from these points we will avoid problems in our homes," added the Town Hall.
