ARCHIVED - Murcia city activates warning system due to air pollution
Residents in the city of Murcia and the surrounding areas have been advised to reduce exposure to the contaminated air
The council in the municipality of Murcia, which includes the capital city and all of its outlying districts, has activated warning level protocol for air contamination this Monday (October 18), after the daily limit of 50 micrograms per cubic metre was exceeded on Sunday.
The contaminant found in the atmosphere was ‘PM10 Particulate Material’ and this episode of air pollution coincides with the prediction that a mass of Saharan air was due to reach the peninsula last week, carrying pesky red dust which is known to leave a layer of dirt over everything in its path.
San Basilio station reported 58 micrograms per cubic metre of this contaminant in the report published on Sunday October 17 and more of the Saharan dust could be deposited in south-eastern Spain this Monday.
Although the alert level is the least serious of the three existing levels (warning level, contamination episode level and alert situation level), the council has warned elderly residents as well as people with breathing problems or lung issues to avoid exposing themselves to the Saharan dust and traffic signs carrying messages such as ‘Avoid the city centre’ and ‘Drive efficiently’ have been dotted around the municipality.
The general population has also been advised to reduce prolonged exposure and avoid outdoor exercise, to use public transport or sustainable vehicles in order to prevent further air pollution, to lower electricity consumption and to work from home if possible.
