ARCHIVED - Murcia city Christmas lights still up in mid-January
The vice-Mayor of Murcia blames the delay on a “mistake” by the removal company and calls the blunder “insignificant”

Back in December, outraged residents in Murcia city called for the city council to urgently install Christmas lights across the city, something which they finally did on December 7, after several delays. Now, however, locals are calling for the exact opposite, as the council has yet to take down festive decorations and lights in several neighbourhoods.
Despite the fact that we are nearing the end of January, many areas of Murcia, including La Fama, Vistabella and Cabezo de Torres, are still displaying Christmas lights, which are still turned on every night.
However, the vice-Mayor of the local council has stated that the number of Christmas lights yet to be removed is “insignificant” and could be due to some kind of mistake by the company in charge of the removal. He went on to state that members of the public are welcome to use the customer service number of the company to inform them of any such mistakes.
In addition, Murcia City Council has also indicated that the company’s logistic plan to take down all of the Christmas decorations officially ends this Sunday January 23 and that most of the work is carried out at the weekend or on bank holidays to minimise traffic disruption.
In some neighbourhoods, such as San Antón and Santa Eulalia, the lights have reportedly been left up on purpose, as these areas are celebrating their patron saint festivities in January and February.
