ARCHIVED - Murcia city is already putting up its Christmas lights
The city and surrounding area has started installing its lights early, but for the second year running there will be no tree in the Plaza Circular
Too early or right on time? It’s still early November and the Christmas lights are already going up in Murcia capital city. Normally the city of Vigo in the northwestern corner of Spain is the first to put up it’s Christmas lights every year, and has some of the best Christmas light displays and decorations in all of Spain, but this year Murcia city is not far behind.
The company in charge of installing the lights are putting up a total of 1,223 decorative elements, including arches, signs, cones, stars and other special designs, and 2,908 metres of LED lights in garlands, distributed throughout the municipality. The total cost of the project is 2,116,467 euros.
“The workers have been installing these decorations that adorn the streets of the city and districts since last week,” said sources from the Town Hall, in a move that anticipates last year, when the Christmas lights were installed far too late.
When will the Christmas lights be switched on in Murcia city 2022?
The Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Infrastructures, Contracting and Development, Mario Gómez, will meet in the coming days with traders and neighbourhood associations to agree on the date for switching on and off of these lights.
Although the City Council has not yet decided when the lights will be switched on, everything suggests that it will be in the days leading up to the December long weekend – sometime between December 8 and December 11.
They are also considering the possibility of bringing forward the switching off of the lights from 1am to 12 midnight every night this year, except on December 24 and 31, when they will remain on as in previous years until 2am.
The aim is to reduce energy consumption by 15% and therefore public spending, too. Mario Gómez, however, stated that “this issue will be discussed with neighbours and shopkeepers to see if they consider it appropriate and a joint decision will be taken”.
Another thing the Town Hall wants to try out this year in terms of energy saving is rotating the designs and lights around the city so it looks different from previous years, but with the material resources already available.
Murcia’s Plaza Circular is once again without a Christmas tree
While the lights are going up nice and early, for the second consecutive year, it does not include the installation of the big Christmas tree in the Plaza Circular. This is because of a contracting issue with the decoration company, as the installation of the tree is not included in this.
The streets in the capital that are having their Christmas lights installed are: Comandante Mariano Tejera, Cronista Valcárcel, Batalla de las Flores, Paseo Marqués de los Vélez, Ronda de Levante, Plaza de San Antolín, calle Virgen de la Esperanza, Escultor Roque López, Junterones, Plaza de Santa Eulalia, calle Cánovas del Castillo, Correos, Floridablanca, Plano San Francisco, Teniente Flomesta, Puente Viejo, calle Canalejas, Princesa, calle Cartagena, Paseo Marqués de Corvera, calle Santa Teresa, calle Madre de Dios, Jara Carrillo, Gutiérrez Mellado, Jaime I, Avenida Constitución and the streets in the centre of the capital, Jabonerías and Calle Sociedad.
As for the outlying pedanías districts of the central Murcian municipality, the Christmas lights have already been installed in: Algezares, Beniaján, Casillas, El Raal, Llano de Brujas, Puente Tocinos, Santa Cruz, Churra, El Puntal, La Ñora, Aljucer, Barqueros, Cañada Hermosa, Puebla de Soto, San Ginés, Sangonera la Seca, Sangonera la Verde, Algezares, Barrio del Progreso, Beniaján, Los Garres, San Pio X, Baños y Mendigo, Cañadas de San Pedro and Sucina.
