ARCHIVED - Murcia City to get 849 new cameras to control low emission zones
The low emission zone in the Murcia capital is expected to limit the vehicles that can drive in the centre by 2023
By 2023, around 150 municipalities in Spain will have Low Emission Zones (LEZs) as mandated by the Climate Change and Energy Transition Law to limit the number polluting cars and vehicles that can drive around city centres.
In Murcia City, the government team of PSOE and Ciudadanos is working to meet this challenge and be prepared for the date when the LEZ comes into force in the Murcian capital. According to municipal sources, “municipal technicians will soon begin to draw up the project for the implementation of Low Emission Zones to present it to the next call for Next Generation funds.”
Part of this preparation involves upgrading and modernising the traffic management infrastructure by installing 849 cameras to control access to the Low Emission Zones and ensure that the most polluting class of vehicles do not enter the restricted zone. This project has been financed with European funds and has a budget of 7.2 million euros.
Another project, also financed with European funds amounting to 633,000 euros, aims to reduce traffic congestion with software and hardware systems for the reception and analysis of data in real time.
However, the Council wants to be very cautious and tread carefully. “The project is being carried out calmly because in other municipalities, such as Barcelona and Madrid, there have been problems and even unfavourable rulings and we want to offer the greatest guarantees to citizens and, at the same time, safeguard the legal security of the whole process,” explained the City Council.
For this reason, and to avoid problems, Murcia City Council is waiting for the Ministry for Ecological Transition to publish the Royal Decree it has been working on, which should define the minimum requirements for these zones restricting the most polluting traffic.
