ARCHIVED - Murcia Covid update August 5: infection rate continues to decrease but two more fatalities
Two more deaths have been registered in the Region as the cumulative incidence rate drops for the third consecutive day
As Covid experts in the Region of Murcia suggest that the curve of the fifth wave of the pandemic is flattening, the all-important 14-day cumulative incidence rate has fallen for the third day in a row and now stands at 466 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. While the decline is slow – seven points in the last 24 hours and fifteen since Monday, when the peak was reached - the downward trend now seems to be established.
The incidence rate in Murcia is far lower than the Spanish average (633 on Wednesday according to the Ministry of Health), and with the 7-day rate at under half the 14-day rate on 223 the indications are that the decline will continue at least for the next few days.
505 new infections were registered in Murcia on Wednesday, marking a slight decrease on the 516 of the previous day. The number of active cases also fell by almost 50, now standing at 5,181.
Of the new confirmed positives, 143 are in the municipality of Murcia, 45 in Cartagena, 43 in Lorca, 38 in Molina de Segura and 23 in Jumilla, with the remainder distributed throughout the other 40 municipalities.
In addition to the drop in infections overall, hospitalisations have also continued their gradual decrease, falling for the second consecutive day to 150. 30 of those patients are receiving intensive care.
It should be noted that almost half of the people in hospital have not been vaccinated, while 80 per cent of those in the ICU have not been immunised.
Sadly, two more Covid-related fatalities were added to the toll on Wednesday, a 93-year-old woman from the municipality of Murcia and an 89-year-old man from Lorca. This brings the total pandemic death toll in Murcia to 1,624 since the beginning of the pandemic.
In all, 127,623 people have contracted the virus since the beginning of the pandemic while 120,818 have overcome Covid. There are currently 5,031 people in home isolation with mild symptoms.
In recent days, more than 30,000 Murcians between the ages of 12 and 19 have received the Covid-19 vaccine while more than 27 million people throughout Spain are now fully vaccinated.
