ARCHIVED - Murcia Covid Update July 29: Number of infections reach new peak
The Region of Murcia has registered 651 new cases of Covid in the past 24 hours
The Region of Murcia continues its Covid escalation during the fifth wave of the pandemic, with 651 new cases recorded in the last 24 hours, a number that hasn’t been seen in the area since February 2 when cases were surging in the third wave. This is a jump of 112 new infections compared with Tuesday, bringing the total number of cases in the Region since the start of the coronavirus pandemic to 124,185.
Crucially, the cumulative incidence rate over a 14-day period was at 444.5 on Wednesday according to the data published by Murcia Salud, up from 443 the previous day. This is worrying considering the figure was below 50 just a few short weeks ago, and that the incidence rate is now nine times higher than before the Covid restrictions were eased.
Of the 651 new cases, 173 correspond to the municipality of Murcia, 132 to Cartagena, 51 to Lorca, 31 to Molina de Segura, 19 to Mazarrón and 17 to Torre Pacheco, with the remaining infections dispersed across the other municipalities.
Hospital pressure is also on the rise in the Region as a result of the new infections, with 138 people now admitted, up six in the last 24 hours. Of these, 24 are now being treated in Intensive Care Units (ICU), one more than the previous day.
Two Covid outbreaks affecting 15 people have been reported in care homes in Cartagena and Lorca in recent days, with all staff returning from leave now required to submit to PCR or antigen tests.
Thankfully, no new Covid-related deaths were reported on Wednesday so that the total death toll in Murcia since the beginning of the pandemic remains at 1,616.
However, the number of active infections stood at 4,463 yesterday, more than 400 cases above Tuesday’s data, and the number of people in home isolation with mild Covid symptoms has soared to 4,325.
Some 6,375 PCR and antigen tests were carried out in the region, with 10.2 per cent of them reading a positive result.
Overall in Spain, significant strides have been made throughout the country to vaccinate those aged between 20 and 29, the group with the highest infection rate. To date, 15.5 per cent have been fully vaccinated and 41.7 per cent have had at least one dose.
Vaccination Update: In the Region, a total of 1.650.953 vaccinations have been administered with 758.967 people now fully vaccinated in Murcia.
