Murcia cuts red tape to speed up housing construction

ARCHIVED ARTICLE -

The new law will combine all housing approval steps into a single process, cutting years off construction times

Murcia cuts red tape to speed up housing construction

The Regional Government of Murcia is taking steps to make building new homes faster and simpler. President Fernando López Miras announced that the Affordable Housing Bill (Ley de Vivienda Asequible) will introduce a ‘unified residential project,’ which combines all the usual planning approvals into a single administrative process for new housing developments.

“We are going to speed up and shorten [times] as much as possible,” López Miras said and added the bill is almost ready and expected to be approved in the coming days.

The president also spoke about the fact that government initially proposed a law to build 25,000 new homes over the next five years, but the previous draft was rejected by the regional assembly. The new approach keeps the goal but simplifies the bureaucracy to make it easier for developers to get projects moving quickly.

Faster approvals should help get construction moving and make it easier for families to find homes, while still keeping a close eye on planning standards to avoid past mistakes, like building in flood-prone zones or too near dry riverbeds.

López Miras also introduced other priorities for Murcia in 2026 like tax cuts, better public safety and a new Water Resilience Observatory.
