ARCHIVED - Murcia Gran Via to be closed to traffic on Sundays from October 10
Murcia city is attempting to reduce the use of private vehicles and increase sustainability by banning cars on the Gran Vía every Sunday
As part of efforts to increase sustainability in Murcia city, the council plan to close one of the main streets, the Gran Vía, every Sunday starting on October 10, prohibiting cars and other motorised vehicles from using the street and allowing pedestrians to make use of the space.
The plan to reduce the use of privatised vehicles in the city centre was announced in September and was originally supposed to start on the first Sunday in October, but was postponed until October 10.
From now on, pedestrians will take over the busy Gran Vía on Sundays between 11am and 2pm, with different themed activities every week.
On October 10, the theme will be ‘Uncles and Aunts Day’ and ‘Mental Health Day’, with the following programme:
- 11am to 2pm: Solidarity Fair (hosted by associations and entities related to mental health).
- 11am to 2pm: Activities run by charities and non-profit organisations in honour of World Mental Health Day.
- 11am to 2pm: gifted plants for children accompanied by their uncle or aunt.
- 11am to 2pm: open-air library, ‘Read a story with your uncle/aunt’.
- 11am to 12 noon: Capoeira workshop with ‘Simbora’ family.
- 12 noon to 1pm: Hula Hoop workshop.
- 12 noon to 1pm: inclusive dance workshop.
- 12 noon to 1pm: batucada (drums).
- 12 noon to 2pm: Mokimó Plaza, ‘Wooden Games of the World’
- 1pm to 2pm: Bachata movement for mental health with AyM; learn the choreography and dance on Gran Vía!
The rest of the month’s themes are creators from Murcia (October 17), health and sports (October 24) and urban themes (October 30).
Murcia city council are also planning to extend the measure to other parts of the municipality soon, including El Palmar, Cabezo de Torres, Puente Tocinos and Espinardo.
