ARCHIVED - Murcia has almost 60 per cent fewer bank branches than a decade ago
There are now just three bank branches per 10,000 people in the Murcia Region
As the world embraces online and digital banking, financial customers in Murcia are witnessing more and more physical branches closing their doors for good. At the end of last year, the Region boasted a mere four bank branches for every 10,000 inhabitants. By the end of the first half of 2022, this paltry figure was reduced to just three.
Essentially, in the last decade, the number of local bank branches available to people in Murcia has been reduced by more than half, close to 60% in fact.
The Region closely follows, and exceeds, the national trend and in Spain as a whole, 50% of branches have disappeared since 2012, leaving four for every 10,000 inhabitants.
According to a Financial Observatory report published on Tuesday November 15, there has been an “uninterrupted” reduction in financial institutions in Murcia since 2012, a situation which has particularly isolated the elderly and those living in rural areas with poor internet connection.
Despite the growing concerns, the report points out that the closure of bank branches in the Region so far this year hasn’t actually been as pronounced as in 2021. However, closures between January and June still reduced the number of branches per 10,000 to just 3.47, compared to 3.59 offices in December last year.
In Spain, the reduction went from 4.03 to 3.82 offices per 10,000 inhabitants.
