Murcia organises successful Northern Ireland golf tournament to boost golf tourism
The ‘Region of Murcia Masters 2022’ tournament came to a close this week, impressing the Northern Irish golfers with the quality of Murcia’s courses
The Region of Murcia organised the golf tournament ‘Region of Murcia Masters 2022’, held in Northern Ireland and Murcia recently, in which more than 700 Irish and Northern Irish golfers participated.
This tournament began last April and was played at the most important golf clubs in Northern Ireland, including Ardglass, Castlerock, Clandeboye, Dunmurry, Edenmore, Galgorm, Castle, Killymoon, Lough Erne Resort, Portadown and Whitehead.
Now, the final days of the tournament were held in Murcia from November 14 to 18, at the La Torre Golf Resort, Saurines and La Manga Club golf courses.
The competition concluded with a promotional activity of the golf activities and facilities that Murcia has to offer, carried out by the Association of Golf Businessmen of the Region of Murcia (Aegolf) and technicians of the Institute of Tourism (Itrem), with the aim of attracting the estimated 55,000 Northern Irish golfers and golf-lovers to come to Murcia to play and take golf holidays.
In the last twenty years, the Murcia Region has had the highest growth in the number of golf courses in Spain, going from four courses in 2003 to 22 at present in its four areas: Mar Menor, La Manga, Murcia City Golf and Águilas Golf Destination.
In 2019, the Region received 165,000 tourists who travelled to play golf, accounting for 2 million overnight stays in local hotels – 2% more than in 2018. Golf holidays generated direct expenditure of around 265 million euros, which represents 8.1% of the total tourism spending in the whole year.
