ARCHIVED - Murcia partygoers flee to Torrevieja to enjoy fewer restrictions
An Alicante company is offering package deals to Murcia customers, including transport to and from Torrevieja
Taking advantage of the harsh anti-Covid restrictions imposed on the nightlife sector in the Region of Murcia, an Alicante company has begun offering buses to and from the coastal city of Torrevieja, which is hugely popular with British tourists and expats.
In Murcia, bars, restaurants and nightlife venues all have to close at 1am, as well as having limitations on the number of customers per table and being prohibited from using dance floors. In addition, nightclubs in the Region have been forced to ask customers for their Covid passports since last year; something which other autonomous communities are already leaving behind.
All of these measures make somewhere like Torrevieja, where there is an incredibly lively nightlife with few to no restrictions, very attractive for those looking for a fun night out.
The company offering these trips to the neighbouring province of Alicante charge customers 25 euros for a meal, a drink and entrance to a nightclub, with an additional ten-euro fee for Murcia clients who require transport by bus to and from Torrevieja.
This situation is obviously a positive one for the hospitality sector in Alicante, as they are benefiting from Murcian customers as well as those already in Torrevieja, but hospitality organisations in Murcia, such as the the Federation of Hospitality and Tourism Entrepreneurs of the Region of Murcia (HoyTu), have spoken out about the “unfair” restrictions.
HoyTu president, Jesús Jimenez, claims that limiting nightlife activities to 1am is the same as closing the sector altogether and points out that Covid cases in Alicante are similar to those in Murcia. He has also complained that the hospitality sector is being used as a tool to coerce the unvaccinated in the Region, while other areas in Spain forgo restrictions completely.
