Here’s the August image of the month taken by the Los Alcázares Digital Camera Club (LADCC)
“Expressing Feelings” was the title put forward to the LADCC members in this month’s competition. Feelings are often difficult to talk about so the descriptive brief for this month’s competition once again challenged many of our members. Sadly, the number of entries was fewer than normal, due to it being holiday time for many. However, those that did enter the competition certainly produced some superb photos!The competition title did raise some more complex issues though, as the top two photos were beautiful pictures of young children and, unfortunately, we are unable to publish the winning photo as the parent did not give permission for this. An August Channel 4 UK news item, amongst many others, recently highlighted problems of putting young children’s photographs online, and the apparent ease with which online sexual predators can produce awful AI enhanced images of these children. According to this recent article sadly some 8000 cases were reported to the National Child Agency (NCA) last year alone.Our camera club are very aware of the intrusion of privacy when taking photographs of children and, indeed, any person and are very careful to get the appropriate permission to use, and publish, the photo taken of them. Members carry with them a letter of explanation, in both English and Spanish, so that we can ask members of the public whether they have any issues with our taking, and using, their photo.As to this month’s competition, Sally Gasston took the honors with her two photos, which finished first and third. The winning photo ‘Mischief in her Eyes’ was a delightful photo of her granddaughter. Sally said the reason she so liked her winning image was that it wasn’t posed and was a spur of the moment shot of her six-year-old granddaughter who just approached the camera with ‘mischief in her eyes’!In second place was Julian Pering’s delightful shot ‘Concentration’ and the photo definitely shows that! Julian advised that this was his great-granddaughter’s attempt to stand on her own. Great shot and what great effort shown!
Julian Pering’s photo “Determination”In Sally’s third placed photo, she managed to capture two of her fellow pádel players celebrating after the team’s game, earlier in the day, in the finals in Valencia. Although they didn’t win, to get to Valencia was a great achievement and the whole team celebrated that evening. Using her iPhone, Sally captured another unposed, spur of the moment shot, which definitely shows their happiness!
Sally’s photo “Happiness shared”Whilst a hot August continues, the club’s regular meetings are still on hold but will resume in September. In the meantime, the club’s members have been asked to look at photography’s ‘Golden Hour’ for the next monthly competition!This popular camera club usually meets twice a month, at the Las Claras Centre in Los Alcázares, on the first Tuesday of every month and, often, an outing towards the end of the month, where the group gets together to collectively work on the topic for the monthly competition. With modern day technology we can all keep in contact for training sessions, sharing knowledge etc via ‘group chats’. We are interested in hearing from anyone who would like to join us when the opportunity arises. Share the pleasure of photography in the Mar Menor area
The Los Alcázares Digital Camera Club (LADCC) was founded in 2006 and was originally called the LA Digital Cafe, where members met over a coffee to discuss photography. This quickly developed into a more formal programme of monthly photo competitions and outings to places of photographic interest.Over the years, the club has adapted to the changes in camera technology and techniques, and continued throughout Covid by using ‘Zoom’ for online meetings and learning sessions.
The club is now a small, enthusiastic, friendly group where members encourage and support each other at the start of, and throughout, their photographic journey. The group includes a wide range of people with varying skills, all of whom are happy to share techniques, tips and ideas to improve one’s hobby.
They have monthly competitions and outings that provide an opportunity to explore different aspects of photography and develop camera craft and artistic skills. Their indoor sessions may include in-house training, reviews of monthly competitions or planning outings to cover topics discussed.
They meet once a month at the ‘Centro Cultural las Claras’ in Los Narejos, which has super facilities and ample parking. Any outings are usually towards the end of the month to link in with our regular competitions.
