Murcia photo of the month February 2026
Here’s the February image of the month taken by the Los Alcázares Digital Camera Club (LADCC)
LADCC runs a monthly competition for its members and, at the club´s last meeting, the topics for this year were confirmed. This has thrown up a range of unusual and testing topic titles and February’s competition proved no exception, with photographers asked to produce photos on the topic of ‘Old and New’. This proved to be particularly challenging for the members as both old and new had to be conveyed in one image, and simply choosing a subject, or subjects, was not the easiest of tasks!
However, some delightful photos were skillfully produced covering old and new tools, currencies, watches and buildings with some incredibly clever creations. Given that the Winter Olympics are on TV at the moment of writing and that the Región de Murcia has also seen snow recently we will continue with an Olympic theme! Sixteen members put their Olympic judges’ hats on and awarded Gary Hull both the gold and silver medals for his two entries “Lighting the Way’ and ‘Line of Succession’ respectively. His superb photos thoughtfully captured the topic brief. Both photos were carefully created and showed great, imaginative examples of old and new. In his winning photo he managed to capture the warm glow of candles against the modern-day contrast of stark LED lighting. For his silver medal Gary cleverly rolled £50 notes to align the British Queen’s and King’s heads and held them in place with some very careful sellotaping! In so doing, his photo showed an impressive amount of £50.00 notes but Gary claimed that the money wasn’t his and that he had borrowed it. Those are the sort of friends we all need!!!

Continuing the Olympics theme the judges awarded the bronze medal to Sally Gasston whose photo entitled ‘Side by Side, Centuries Apart’ was taken while staying in Albacete. Whilst visiting the old town Sally saw a great example of where architectural worlds co-exist - a modern metal staircase on one side of the street and old, ornate, rounded building facades on the other.

A final word on the “Olympic judging panel”, aka members, as the average monthly scores were slightly down on last month. This could be because, whilst the club enjoys an international membership, some of this month’s photos bore far more significance for English nationals and the relevance of old and new in some images was lost to some of our international members. However, this all adds an extra dimension as to how members interpret the different topic titles.
Despite the recent bad weather, the club has remained active and groups of photographers have been out and about around the region. A visit to the home of CB Horadada’s basketball team saw a small group of enthusiasts experimenting with some new techniques. This proved challenging but added ‘sports action’ photos to their repertoires. We are grateful to our hosts at CB Horadada for giving us this opportunity.
This popular camera club usually meets twice a month, at the Las Claras Centre in Los Alcázares, on the first Tuesday of every month and, often, an outing towards the end of the month, where the group gets together to collectively work on the topic for the monthly competition. With modern day technology we can all keep in contact for training sessions, sharing knowledge etc. via ‘group chats’. We are interested in hearing from anyone who would like to join us when the opportunity arises. You will be put on a waiting list and be contacted when a space becomes available. Share the pleasure of photography in the Mar Menor area
The Los Alcázares Digital Camera Club (LADCC) was founded in 2006 and was originally called the LA Digital Cafe, where members met over a coffee to discuss photography. This quickly developed into a more formal programme of monthly photo competitions and outings to places of photographic interest.
Over the years, the club has adapted to the changes in camera technology and techniques, and continued throughout Covid by using ‘Zoom’ for online meetings and learning sessions.
The club is now a small, enthusiastic, friendly group where members encourage and support each other at the start of, and throughout, their photographic journey. The group includes a wide range of people with varying skills, all of whom are happy to share techniques, tips and ideas to improve one’s hobby.
They have monthly competitions and outings that provide an opportunity to explore different aspects of photography and develop camera craft and artistic skills. Their indoor sessions may include in-house training, reviews of monthly competitions or planning outings to cover topics discussed.
They meet once a month at the ‘Centro Cultural las Claras’ in Los Narejos, which has super facilities and ample parking. Any outings are usually towards the end of the month to link in with our regular competitions.
