ARCHIVED - Murcia reveals plans to tranform historic Rex cinema into a cultural landmark
The city council in Murcia wants to buy the building and have it declared an Asset of Cultural Interest
Murcia City Council will "shortly" begin negotiations with the firm that owns the historic Rex cinema to purchase the building so that it can be "kept as a cultural landmark".
The local authority will then start proceedings to declare the building an Asset of Cultural Interest.
News broke on Tuesday June 21 that Carceserna SL was considering converting the former cinema for restaurant and leisure purposes, and within 48 hours, Murcia Mayor, José Antonio Serrano announced the city council's plans to buy and preserve the iconic building.
The Consistory now hopes to "reach an economic agreement for the purchase or management of the building with the intention of respecting its historical use".
The Rex cinema is protected by the Pechm (Special Plan for the Historic Complex of Murcia), and according to the city council, "should be used and enhanced to make it available to the people of Murcia, maintaining the cultural identity it has always had".
In addition, the council will take the necessary steps to initiate the proceedings to declare the Rex cinema an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC).
According to Murcia city's Town Planning Department, the company that owns the cinema has not yet presented "a concrete project", only a declaration of intent to extend the uses of the building.
Once this application has been received, a 30-day public exhibition period will be opened for the presentation of any objections/comments.
