ARCHIVED - Murcia road included in five most dangerous roads in Spain
More than 2,000 kilometres of roads in Spain are considered dangerous
The main focus of Spanish road authorities for decades has been a reduction in the number of unnecessary traffic-related deaths, and in the last 30 years, Spain has diminished this number by a considerable 80%, going from almost 10,000 deaths in 1989 to 1,755 in 2019.
According to the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), the condition of the roads, excessive speed and the consumption of substances have been the main causes of traffic fatalities in recent years, and the authorities have committed to installing more cameras and safety devices to improve this figure further.
Nevertheless, the Royal Automobile Club of Spain (RACE) has identified several black spots on Spanish roads where the majority of serious accidents occur. Their report examined incidents over the last three years, their severity and their relationship with the characteristics of the road to obtain the five most dangerous stretches.
The five most dangerous stretches of road in Spain
- N-240: From kilometre 303 to 316.8 in the province of Huesca
- N-541: From kilometre 23.5 to 33.6 in the province of Ourense
- N-345: From its beginning to kilometre 7.2 in the province of Murcia
- N-642: From its beginning to kilometre 8.2 in the province of Lugo
- N-550: From kilometre 303 to 316.8 in the province of A Coruña
The report has developed a risk index through which it has identified a total of 49.4 kilometres of road it considers black spots. While the risk index in these sections is very close to 100, the figure has been drastically reduced over the years, dramatically increasing the road safety in general in Spain.
