Murcia supermarket named the cheapest in Spain
With grocery prices rising, you can still bag a bargain in the Region of Murcia

Every shopper knows that grocery prices have reached extortionate levels across Spain in the last 12 months, and even the most price-conscious consumer finds it difficult to bag a bargain these days. So it will come as good news that the Alcampo hypermarket in Murcia has recently been rated among the cheapest in Spain.
That’s according to ‘The cheapest supermarkets of 2023’ report commissioned by the Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU), who have deemed that Alcampo in the Region shares the top spot with stores from the same chain in Vigo, Castellón, Teruel, Valencia and Gijón.
Moving out of the top 5 on the list, the next biggest bang for your buck in terms of a weekly shop can be found at ‘Dani’ in Granada. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the two most expensive outlets in the whole country are in Madrid.
But even amongst the same supermarket chains, there’s a huge price difference between autonomous communities and overall, the best value places to shop in Spain are La Rioja, Galicia and Murcia.
Up, up it goes…
The most basic basket of shopping has increased by 14.1% in the last year in Spain, with an average annual expenditure of 6,019 euros, but it is possible to save 1,056 euros on average per year shopping in the same city depending on the supermarket chosen, despite price increases.
In its latest study, the OCU examined some 236 products that generally make up a regular grocery haul, including fresh fruit, veg, meat and fish, pre-packaged food and personal care items, from both leading brands and supermarket white labels.
What they found is that the price of 90% of the total products has increased.
Among the very, very few products that fell, sunflower oil (-39.8%), Canary Islands bananas (-34.8%) and fresh cheese (-21.2%) led the way.
