ARCHIVED - Murcian businesses oppose new minimum wage increases
Employers in Murcia, Spain say the central government’s decision to raise minimum salaries will put 9,000 jobs at risk
The association of employers in Murcia, Croem, like the rest of the business community in Spain, has opposed the increase in the minimum wage proposed by the national government. The Ministry of Labour came to an agreement with the labour unions on Thursday September 16 to raise the minimum wage to 965 euros a month.
Business owners in Murcia argue that they are already struggling due to Covid restrictions and the 3,500 workers still on ERTE furlough schemes, and cannot afford to pay higher wages. “It’s not appropriate. We are still in a pandemic situation,” said José María Albarracín, the president of the Regional Confederation of Business Organisations of Murcia.
The main opposition to increase in the minimum wage is that it would negatively impact between 6,000 and 9,000 jobs in the Region of Murcia. The trade unions, however, are demanding that the minimum wage be raised further to 1,000 euros/month, and the government has promised a series of increases over the next 2 years.
