ARCHIVED - Murder rate in Valencia region is higher than national average
Spain has an average homicide rate of 0.63 per 100,000 inhabitants whilst Valencia has a rate of 0.73
Following a weekend in which two people were murdered on the Costa Blanca, including the stabbing of a teenager in a park, the latest statistics from the National Institute of Statistics show that the Valencia region has a higher murder rate by ratio than the national average in Spain.
For statistical purposes, homicide relates to the intentional killing of a person, including murder, euthanasia and infanticide, and in Spain the average rate is 0.63 per 100,000 inhabitants.
But in the Valencia region, the figure stands at 0.73 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 12 months, although this has fallen from 0.80 in 2019.
There are only four autonomous communities with a higher intentional killing rate: Ceuta with a rate of 2.38; La Rioja (1.58); Extremadura (0.85); and Castilla la Mancha (0.83).
In the latest tragedy, a 16-year-old male was fatally stabbed during a fight in a park in the Valencian town of Burjassot on Sunday evening, December 5. Police have arrested a young man on suspicion of murder.
On Saturday December 4, a 30-year-old woman died after being allegedly stabbed by her partner at the couple's home in the Valencian neighbourhood of l'Eixample. A 35-year-old man has been remanded in custody without bail as the investigation continues.
