ARCHIVED - Nasty scare for Costa Blanca kayakers stranded at sea for six hours
The pair, from Benidorm, took shelter in a cave on the cliffs when sea conditions took a turn for the worse.
What should have been a pleasant morning at sea turned into an ordeal for two 51-year-old Benidorm residents on Sunday when rough waters caught them unawares and they began to fear they would capsize or be thrown onto the rocks.
The pair had set out from Benidorm on a kayak at around 10 am and were close to the cliffs in Serra Gelada when sea conditions changed suddenly, forcing them to take shelter in a cave and wait for a boat to go by and spot them.
According to local press reports, hours went by before they managed to catch the attention of a passing jet ski rider, who informed the rescue services. After heading for the spot, lifeguards from Benidorm called for Local Police assistance due to the complicated location of the stranded kayakers, who were wary of a sea rescue as they feared the waves would smash them against the rocks.
However, a lifeguard and an officer eventually managed to reach them, help them over the rocks and get them into the boat one at a time. Luckily the pair escaped injury and were taken back to dry land in one piece at around 6.45 pm after what had turned into a very long and eventful day.
