ARCHIVED - Neolithic cave in Beniarres opened to the public for the first time
This historic Neolithic site, located in Beniarrés, El Comtat comarca, dates back to around 5500-5000 b.C.
The provincial council in Alicante and the Town Hall of Beniarrés have recently revealed details about the work that has been carried out on the archaeological site, Cova de L’Or, which was opened to the public for the first time this month.
The project has transformed the Interpretation Centre of Cova de L’Or, as well as the site itself, into a museum, where visitors can see replicas and original items found during the different excavations carried out on the archaeological site.
In addition, the exterior has been reconditioned to allow visitors and access to the cave has been improved to facilitate exploration of the cave. The paths and roads which lead to the site have also been improved and the total cost of the work carried out on the site is around 200,000 euros.
This project will allow visitors to view one of most important Neolithic sites in the province, as some of the artefacts found at Cova de L’Or date back to 5500-5000 b.C. Furthermore, symbolic ceramic pieces found at the site have lead to speculation that this location was used for ceremonies and rituals.
The objective of the project has been to add to the value of the important Neolithic archaeological site of Sierra del Benicadell, which includes Cova de L’Or and the Interpretation Centre at the site.
Last weekend (June 12 and 13), the site was opened for the first time and this weekend (June 19 and 20) the public will be able to visit for free again, from 9 am until 2 pm and from 5 pm until 8 pm on Saturday, and from 9 am until 2 pm on Sunday.
However, after this weekend, it will be necessary to make a previous reservation to visit the site, with a minimum of five people per group and a maximum of 15 people at a time.
Reservations can be made for these guided visits by calling 965 14 90 00 or by sending an email to covadelor@marqalicante.com
