ARCHIVED - Nerja recruits further Civil Protection officers and unveils new vehicle
Nerja, in the Málaga province of the Andalucía region, is recruiting 12 new Civil Protection officers this month, aiming to nearly double the numbers of officers this year.
Following investment in Nerja’s Local Police earlier this year, the town’s council has announced plans to boost the numbers of Civil Protection officers in a bid to increase security throughout the municipality.
The Mayor of Nerja, Jose Alberto Armijo unveiled a new vehicle to be used by Civil Protection this week and said the council is currently recruiting more officers.
Nerja currently has 40 Civil Protection officers and the mayor said 12 more are being recruited this month, while a further 16 are expected to join in June as part of a plan to have more than 70 officers by the end of the year.
The popular town has been carrying out a series of improvement to boost safety ahead of the summer when it hopes that international tourists will once more be able to visit the Andalucía region.
Tourism has been badly hit since the covid pandemic began, the latest tourism figures published for March yesterday revealing that only 51,000 foreign visitors came to Andalucía in March this year compared to the 843,000 in pre-pandemic March 2019. Spending also dropped from 884 million to just 46.7 million as a result!
