ARCHIVED - New Covid measures in Alicante, Valencia and Castellón will not be announced until May 10
The regional authorities want to study the epidemiological data after the Interterritorial Health Council meeting on May 5
The vice-president of the Comunidad Valenciana, Mónica Oltra, has announced that new anti-Covid restrictions will not be revealed until Monday (May 10), 24 hours after the state of alarm in Spain is lifted.
Sra. Oltra has also stated that the Interterritorial Health Council will hold a meeting on Wednesday (May 5) and that the Interdepartmental Covid board in the region of Valencia will meet on Saturday (May 8) to further discuss the epidemiological situation.
Although some of the restrictions are expected to be relaxed, the president of the region, Ximo Puig, is insistent that the 10 pm curfew will remain in place.
When the state of alarm is lifted on May 9, the perimetral closure of the Comunidad Valenciana will end, and the government does not foresee employing any further travel restrictions within the region.
However, the vice-president has reminded the population that, in order to avoid disaster following May 9, some anti-Covid restrictions will have to remain in place until the vaccination campaign advances further.
The restrictions in the region of Valencia have been some of the strictest in Spain over the past few months, but Sra. Oltra asks residents of the three provinces of the region to be patient and remain compliant for just a while longer until the pandemic is brought under control by the vaccination process.
The Valencia region has the lowest coronavirus rate on mainland Spain and as of Tuesday (May 5) had only 43 cases per 100,000 of population compared to the Basque Country at 491 cases per 100,000 of population, Madrid at 343.2, Navarra 327.1, Aragon at 296.7, La Rioja at 270.4, and Catalonia at 263.6 over a 14 day period.
There are naturally fears that this high level of contagion in other areas of Spain may result in increased transmission in the Valencia region when residents from these areas are able to move freely to the holiday resorts on the coast and to their second properties in Mediterranean regions, hence the reluctance of the Valencian regional government to remove all restrictions at the same time.
