ARCHIVED - New gourmet area to be created at popular indoor market in Cartagena
Conversion work has already begun at Santa Florentina Market in the Murcia city
Santa Florentina Market in Cartagena is to undergo a major overhaul with the creation of a gourmet area for catering traders, new internal flooring and the refurbishment of stalls.
"The aim is to avoid various problems that plague the market. For example, it would provide a solution to the lack of space currently suffered by the owner of the canteen who has to place chairs and tables against the walls, despite the fact that they shouldn't really be there due to accessibility issues," said the Councillor for Consumer Affairs, Manuel Padín, adding that traders must have the corresponding permit from Vía Pública to use the terrace.
The terrace is being constructed at the rear of the market, and a waste compactor which is currently located there, "emanating bad smells", will be moved to an alley at the side of the market.
The façade will also be painted and the access to the market adapted, whilst drainpipes will be replaced to improve water flow during heavy downpours.
Once the gourmet terrace is finished, a project which is expected to take a month and a half, the interior floor and commercial stalls will be renovated at no cost to the traders.
"To be able to do this, we need the traders whose stalls we will refurbish, at no cost to them, to move to the empty spaces we still have. The idea is to put the vacant stalls out to tender as quickly as possible so that the market is 100% occupied," added Padín.
The overhaul will also include the installation of a lift connecting the market with a nearby car park.
Cartagena recently updated its Market Regulations which will allow traders to open on Saturday afternoons and Sundays.
"The idea is that each trader can organise themselves as they see fit and decide when to open their business," explained the city council.
