ARCHIVED - New parking spaces at Ramblilla de San Lazaro in Lorca
The Town Hall has cleared and is concreting a plot for parking in the "historic centre of Lorca"
Parking issues look set to be eased for residents of the Ramblilla de San Lázaro with the creation of new parking spaces on a plot of land in Calle Montero.
The 440m2 site has been cleared of rubble and is currently being concreted and paved to provide a dozen new spaces in the area on 320m2 of the land.
Mayor of Lorca, Diego José Mateos visited the site on Monday August 8, and assured that the council is "committed to providing parking spaces in the town centre to enhance the daily lives of residents".
Anyone who has tried to park in a Lorca street will, on more than one occasion, have found it difficult to find a vacant space, either free or in the ORA regulated parking zone (there are a total of 2,535 spaces of which 1,515 are in the green zone and 1,020 in the blue zone), especially in the old town and its commercial area.
And the parking problem has been aggravated in recent years by the increase in the number of cars on the road.
According to data from the Regional Statistics Centre of Murcia, at the end of 2021 there were a total of 78,750 vehicles (48,904 of which are cars) registered in the municipality which has a population of 96,328 inhabitants.
In terms of just cars, this equates to one for every two people. The ratio of vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants at the end of 2021 was 758.90; 10 years ago it was 666.20; and in 2001 it was 581.80 per 1,000 inhabitants.
