The roundabout will replace a dangerous T-junction which has been the scene of many accidents over the years
Cartagena Council has formally approved the project drawn up by the General Directorate of Roads of the Autonomous region of Murcia to improve road safety in the towns of El Carmolí and Los Urrutias with the construction of a new roundabout.
This will be at the intersection between the old national road, which runs from the AP-7 motorway to Los Alcázares, which is currently the main access to these two villages.
The action is part of the programming of road safety improvements drawn up by the regional road planning department, but must also be approved by the local council as part of the processes followed, to ensure that the local council is aware of the potential implications of the disruption which inevitably ensues during these construction projects and is aware of the road safety and traffic management implications.
At the moment this intersection is used by more than 2,500 vehicles daily.
The works will be carried out by the regional roads department with a budget of 254,000 euros and an execution period of four months. The new roundabout, which will have a diameter of 36 metres, will eliminate the T-intersection of the RM-F54 highway and reduce the high speed currently reached by vehicles on the main road of that section, in which there are no traffic channelling islands.
