ARCHIVED - Nine arrested in Los Alcazares immigrant exploitation scandal
A Los Alcázares company is accused of exploiting immigrants who were residing illegally in the Region of Murcia
Officers from the Policia Nacional have made a series of arrests in the municipality of Los Alcázares after a company was found to be exploiting irregular immigrants.
In total, nine people have been arrested and will be charged with belonging to a criminal organisation, crimes against workers’ rights, crimes against foreign citizens and document falsification. Amongst the detainees are the two ringleaders, two Spanish men aged 45 and 47, and their trusted advisors: a legal and economic manager and several personnel managers.
The company took advantage of the desperate economic situation of irregular immigrants and used them to obtain cheap labour, without a contract or registering the employees on the Social Security system. The workers were paid next to nothing and were deprived of basic labour and health rights.
Further investigation into the company revealed the existence of a criminal organisation dedicated and specialised in the labour exploitation of foreign nationals who are residing in Spain illegally and the repeated employment of foreign citizens who do not have a work permit.
The police also discovered that the company was using several buses to transport the workforce to the fields, mixing illegal employees with legitimate workers to avoid suspicion, and the authorities believe that this criminal system had been in place for several years.
