ARCHIVED - Nine regions in Spain to receive extra vaccines for immunising non residents
66,000 vaccines will be distributed to regions across Spain, including Valencia and Murcia.
Spain's Ministry of Health is "compensating" nine of the country's autonomous communities for vaccinating non-residents with an extra 66,000 doses.
The Moderna doses will be distributed in Valencia, Murcia, Andalusia, Madrid, Aragon, Catalonia, Navarra and La Rioja in August.
Spain's Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, confirmed the plans on Tuesday, but admitted the figure is "quite modest", particularly in light of the fact the Valencia government has already administered 100,000 jabs to people who are not registered in the community.
"The vaccines will go to the communities that have immunised the most non-residents within their regions and continue to do so throughout the summer," said Darias, adding: "Although scarce, they will compensate in some way for the vaccines already distributed to non-residents in these regions."
Spain has increased its weekly shipments of Moderna from 414,000 to 474,000 throughout July, rising to 913,000 weekly doses in August, and according to data published by the Ministry of Health, a total of 51,710,022 jabs have been administered since the start of the vaccination campaign, with just over 50 per cent of the population now fully immunised.
