No jellyfish nets in the Mar Menor yet
The anti-jellyfish nets are not yet being installed in the waters of the Mar Menor because “there are no large concentrations” of these animals so far this year
Murcia’s government has revealed that the reason they have not yet installed any anti-jellyfish nets in any point of the Mar Menor is because any jellyfish there may be are “not causing difficulties to bathing for the moment”.
Juan María Vázquez, Councillor for the Environment, Universities, Research and the Mar Menor, has stated that the Scientific Committee of the Mar Menor is already prepared to install the nets only in specific places where there are a lot of ‘fried egg jellyfish’ (Cotylorhiza tuberculosa), which this summer have shown that a great strobilation (their method of reproduction) would make bathing difficult.
This is a circumstance which is expected to occur mainly in the northern basin of the Mar Menor but which, however, has not yet developed and at the moment the highest concentration of jellyfish is concentrated in the central part of the lagoon, where people generally do not swim.
Vázquez insisted that there is no specific date either for installing the nets or, if they are installed, for removing them, but that action will be taken according to the specific needs of each moment and each area, with the aim of interfering as little as possible with the ecosystem of the coastal lagoon.
The installation of the nets is very quick and the buoys to which they are anchored are already ready, so, if necessary, they can be put in place immediately.
