ARCHIVED - No New Year restrictions for 25 per cent of Spanish population
Some 12 million people across Spain will ring in the New Year without extra limitations
New Year’s Eve is right around the corner and the surge of the sixth wave of the pandemic, coupled with the emergence of the Omicron variant, has led to cancelled parades and parties across Spain.
For now, Madrid, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León and Extremadura are the only four autonomous communities in the entire country that have refused to implement additional restrictions.
As a result, at least 12 million people in Spain, or 25% of the population, will get to celebrate New Year’s Eve without restrictions.
These four communities have issued a series of recommendations for the New Year celebrations, but have resisted applying any new mandatory measures as the other regions have done, such as the 1am hospitality curfew in Murcia or the Covid passport in the Valencian Community.
For its part, Madrid has imposed some of the most relaxed restrictions throughout the sixth wave of the pandemic, but the offshoot is that its coronavirus cases virtually tripled in just one day. Nevertheless, the regional president believes that this wave is mere days away from peaking and has rendered any further measures “useless”.
On Wednesday December 29, the Ministry of Health in Spain notified 100,760 new Covid infections, the single highest daily increase of the entire pandemic so far. This is a huge increase on the 60,041 positives registered on the same day last week. In addition, the 14-day cumulative rate has also risen 148 points in just 24 hours and now stands at 1,508.39 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
